The Association of Title Agents Makes Generous = Gift
Miami's,=20 The Association of Title Agents, (TATA), has once again made a generous = donation=20 to the FLTA political action committee fund, (TIFPAC). The donation of = $1,500.00=20 will be used to support the candidates recommended by FLTA members who = know=20 these folks to be business minded and supportive of our industry. If any = member=20 has a candidate who you feel shouldbe considered for a campaign = contribution=20 please contact the Association office. Thanks again to TATA for many = years of=20 loyal support.

Mortgage Impairment Defeated Again in=20 Florida
The FLTA was once again instrumental in defeating the = attempt of=20 a non title lien protection insurance company from making inroads into = our=20 state. Due in large part to some very good detective work by one of our = members=20 it was discovered that ILS, Integrated Loan Services, was attempting to = sell a=20 product to one of Florida's largest lenders for their home equity loans. = ILS=20 stated in their promotional brochure that they provided quality loan = support=20 "Faster, Better, Cheaper" in their Quick Close Performance Package which = provided LPI, Lien Protection Insurance-Eliminates the need for title = search=20 clearing. Once provided with these claims the Florida Department of = Insurance=20 immediately sent letters to both the CEO of ILS and the major lender's = President=20 advising them both that the product was prohibited in Florida. As a = result the=20 lender canceled its order.

Should any FLTA member discover = similar=20 activities please immediately contact your Association office so that = prompt=20 action may be taken. Even though the Florida Department of Insurance has = consistently disapproved of these products the snake oil salesmen = continue to=20 try to make inroads.

Wally Senter Retires
Wallace M.=20 "Wally"Senter, has retired from the Department of Insurance effective = July 12th,=20 2002. This information was posted on the web site several weeks ago when = it was=20 "late breaking news". Wally was familiar to many of you in the industry = in his=20 position as Title Insurance Coordinator which he held for 16 years. It = is=20 Wally's intention to continue to be involved in the title insurance = field in a=20 consulting capacity. As Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the FLTA it has = been a=20 pleasure to work with Wally who always conducted himself as a dedicated=20 professional who dealt with complex issues with a sound common sense = approach.=20 Always fair and willing to listen when a problem occurred, Wally did an=20 outstanding job during the somewhat turbulent times that have been = experienced=20 by us all.

FLTA Communications Undergo Change
At the = Summer=20 Board Meeting it was decided to alter the format of the Tallahassee = Report to a=20 quarterly publication that will ultimately be offered in electronic = format. The=20 FLTA web site is also in the process of modernization and tools to use = broadcast=20 e mail for instant messaging are being put on line. Toward this end it = is=20 imperative that we have your current e mail address. The easiest way to = make=20 sure we have it is to send us a message. If you have visited our old web = site=20 lately you will notice that our brand new 2002 directory is there. A = printed=20 version will also be sent to every home office. If you have any = corrections=20 please advise your Association office.

2002 Convention to be = held at=20 Marriott Coral Springs Resort
On November 7th and 8th our annual = meeting=20 will take place at the Marriott Coral Springs Resort in Coral Springs, = Florida.=20 The resort is adjacent to the Sawgrass Extension of the Florida Turnpike = in=20 western Broward County. The registration materials will be sent toward = the end=20 of August and will also be on our web site. The resort is close to the = Sawgrass=20 Mills Shopping area and home to the Heron Bay Golf Course where the = Honda=20 Classic was played this year. Make plans to attend this important = meeting where=20 title professionals come together to learn, converse and have some fun.=20

Basic Training Seminar September 12th & 13th.
All = FLTA=20 members and those non-members who have new hires or persons who wish to = learn=20 more about title searching or closing procedures should mark their = calendars to=20 plan to send those employees who could use an intensive two day seminar. = It will=20 be held at the Crowne Plaza Sable Park Hotel in Tampa. Room rates and = seminar=20 tuition are bargain prices. Rooms for $75.00 and member tuition is only = $35.00=20 for this inaugural program.

Scholarship Forms Included =
The=20 scholarship forms for the Sam D. Mansfield and Marjorie S. Schwartz = awards are=20 included in this newsletter. If you have a family member who qualifies, = send in=20 the form prior to the deadline of August 31st, 2002.

New = Trial=20 Membership Offered
At the Winter Board of Directors meeting a new = "trial=20 basis" membership has been authorized. This membership will allow first = time=20 members to try out membership in our association for a period of one = year for=20 the reduced rate of $150.00. During this trial period the firm will = receive=20 mailings and information and may attend seminars and the convention just = as if=20 they were a regular member. They will not have voting rights during the = trial=20 membership. This will allow someone who is new to the industry or has = never=20 taken an interest in the FLTA to sample our association for a limited = time.=20

Incentives to Membership
The FLTA will continue to = offer one=20 voucher for convention attendance and two seminar vouchers for all new = members=20 to our association (excluding the trial membership described above). It = is hoped=20 that new members will attend our meetings and avail themselves of the=20 opportunities for professional growth afforded by FLTA membership.=20

About the=20 Scholarship Award:
The Sam D. Mansfield Memorial Scholarship = Award was=20 created in 1985 by the Board of Directors of the Florida Land Title = Association,=20 Inc., in memory of its namesake. Mr. Mansfield was a Past-President of = this=20 Association and was involved in many civic endeavors, always stressing = the=20 importance of education. The Marjorie S. Schwartz Memorial Scholarship = was added=20 in 2001 to commemorate our good friend Marge who, like Sam Mansfield, = was an=20 FLTA President and ardent supporter of our Association.

The = amount of=20 the scholarship award is $1,000.00 and will be awarded at the FLTA = Annual=20 Convention in November.

Eligible applicants will receive a = questionnaire=20 and personal profile to be completed and returned to FLTA. The = scholarship=20 committee, which consists of members of the Past President's Council, = will=20 review the submissions and make their selection based on major field of = study,=20 grade point average, and other information provided by the applicant.=20
